Dear Families,
Last Friday we celebrated our hundredth day of school! We did various activities in the morning including 100 exercises, going on a chick hunt to find 100 chicks, making 100 Valentine’s to bring to a nursing home, and we made and got to eat a snack with 100 items in it! The 100 day project that the kids brought in were awesome! I especially loved the bird house made out of sticks and a scene from The Lorax made with coffee stirrers and beads! Incredible! We really enjoyed the snowy day yesterday. While some kindergarten classes opted to stay inside during recess due to the snow being wet, our class bundled up to face the wet snowy weather. It was fun having the playground all to ourselves! I had a grand adventure with all of your children, marching around the playground! I’m always thankful for those moments when I am reminded that your little ones are still kids. And while they continue to make leaps and bounds in their learning, it’s fun to take a moment and just play in the crisp fresh snow! Playing with the kids yesterday is a memory I will cherish. REMINDERS: CLOTHING: I had some wet pants today after recess! When there’s snow, please send your child to school with boots and even snow pants. We want to have more fun adventures on the playground and wearing boots really helps our adventures go to the next level! BOOK ORDERS: are going home today. They will be due back by Monday February 16, 2015. Parents can order online through my website: mssandberg.weebly.com THE SCHOOLS ON THE MOVE 5210 CHALLENGE The Schools on the Move 5210 Challenge is underway! It’s time to have some fun tracking your 5-2-1-0 healthy habits! Activity logs went home with all students last week. If you need a new log or would like to participate in the Family Challenge, go to the Tavelli home page, click on 5210 logo. VALENTINE’S DAY: Karla Baise (Zoey’s mom) will be putting together a Valentine’s day party for the kids and would love volunteers to help out and parents to bring supplies for the party. If this is something you are interested in doing, you can e-mail Karla at [email protected]. PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES: Slips are going home today with a 20 minute conference date/time for parents who opted to conference me. What you can practice with your child at home Reading: Vocabulary words: Admire, community, deliver, workers, schedule High-frequency words: are, there, this, what, do, am, he, she Taking picture walks, whisper reading, and checking for understanding. digraph Sounds ‘th,’ ‘sh,’ ‘wh,’ and ‘ch’ Children are given words (real or nonsense) to read (blend in their head). Ex: wiz, pik Summarizing and Sequencing a story Remembering key details and the main idea Characters- who is in the story Writing: This week we continue to focus on writing three sentences. Our first sentence establishes the even we are writing about. Then, our subsequent sentences add details to support our topic. We reviewed that a sentence needs a naming part (subject) and a telling part (predicate) as well as a capital letter at the beginning and an end mark. Adding the bossy ‘e’ to words that we hear the vowel saying its name. Ex: rode, bike We practiced adding the ‘d’ or ‘ed’ ending to words when we are writing about an event that happened in the past. Ex: started, biked Math: We have been using a pan balance to model addition stories. We see that when we add 1 red block and 3 blue blocks to one side of the balance (1+3), we have to put four orange blocks on the other side in order for the balance to even out (1+3=4). We are practicing counting on from a given number to 100 (79, 80, 81…) Science: We continue to learn about animals and their habitats. This week in science lab we did an experiment using cotton balls to see why ducks put oil on their feathers. When we submerged a cotton ball in water, it sank to the bottom. However, when we coated the cotton ball in oil, it floated on the top! Social Studies: We are learning about community now. Students learned about reading maps, and what they can find in a neighborhood. We have been discussing the people we see in our neighborhood, and how we can be good neighbors/friends. |
