We did the root experiment on carnations! It was so fun watching our carnations develop new colors by changing the water color with food coloring. I’m seeing enormous growth in every child. Thanks for the important work you do at home with your child by spending time with them! This school year is going so well!
REMINDERS:
WALK-A-THON: The Tavelli Walk-a-Thon is Friday, October 10th. The children will walk/run laps around our field during their regular specials time (1:35-2:20). You are more than welcome to join your child during this event! Plan on meeting us out on the field shortly after 1:35!! Please make sure your child is dressed for the weather (we will be walking outside), and wears comfortable walking shoes.

SCIENCE LAB: Mrs. Musante, our science lab teacher is requesting the following: Please have your child collect a few leaves of different size, shape, color, and texture in a sandwich bag and bring to school by Monday, October 13th. Students will be comparing their leaves, looking at leaf structure using hand lenses, and completing leaf rubbings for similarities and differences.
CONFERENCES: Your child’s conference time went home last week. Thank you to the parents who got their conference sheets back to me. If you receive another conference note, please indicate that you can make it and return it in your child’s Thursday folder tomorrow.
NO SCHOOL: There is no school on Thursday, October 16th and Friday, October 17th. These days are for Parent/Teacher conferences. I’m looking forward to meeting with you all and discussing your child.
LIBRARY: We have library on Wednesday.
BOOK ORDERS: Book orders went home last week. If your child is on book trust, please pick out books worth up to $7.00. If you go over $7.00 please send the amount of money you go over by check. READING RED FOLDERS: Please return your child’s red reading folder every Monday. You must read with your child or practice sight words 5 days a week for at least 10 minutes. The books that I put in every Monday are books your child can read independently. Those, you can keep at home. Color in an elephant for every 10 minutes read.

Reading:
-Letters and sounds A to Z.
-Identifying the letter and letter sound S (S, sss, sss, sun), P (p, p, piano)
-blending the sounds for /s/ /a/ and /m/ together to read the word ‘sam’
-Vocabulary words: friend, hobby, partner, favorite, compete
-High-frequency words I, can, a, run, yellow, red, blue, we, the, one, two, three, like, it, is, in, me
-Book handling skills and parts of a book – Cover, title, title page, page, numbers, author, illustrator
-Reading sentences (I can run.) and following along with their finger while they look at the words and say the words aloud.
-Finding the first sound in a word.
-Parts of a story: beginning, middle and end
-Identify the setting, make predictions, and retell the story.
Writing:
-Writing first name with one capital letter and the rest lowercase
-Writing letters A-Z and numbers 0-10
-Drawing a picture that tells a story and writing a word or sentence to match picture
-Writing Dolch sight words we have learned (I, can, a, run, yellow, red, blue, we, the, one, two, three, like, it, is, in, me)
Math:
-Calendar routine: Month, days of the week (past present and future), weather and temperature, patterns, counting by 1s, 2s, 5s, 10s, and backwards from 20, counting the days and school and know that the number fourteen is 1 bundle of 10 and 4 ones.
-Each child constructed their own ten frame to reinforce the meaning of numbers. For example, 1=1 dot; 2=2 dots; 3=3 dots; etc.
-recognizing and counting the teen numbers.
