We have had a fantastic week! The bike rodeo was on Monday. Your child had a blast practicing all the bike safety rules they have been learning in P.E. I posted some pictures on class dojo. We’ve been really working on using I care language. There is seems to be a phenomenon of tattling down in first grade. I haven’t seen so much tattling in my life. We’ve been talking a lot about using kind words, and asking our friends to stop disrespectful behaviors. I’m hoping to nip all this tattling in the bud. Not a recess goes by that I don’t have at least 5 or so kids telling on other kids.
SNAPSHOT OF NEXT WEEK
Specials:
Mon: P.E.
Tues: Art
Wed: Technology and Library
Thurs: Music
Friday: P.E.
Next week in literacy we are working on final blend sounds (‘nd’ as in end, and, bend, etc.). Our Vocabulary words will be admire, offer, charity, focus, challenging. Our Reading Comprehension skills for next week are Main Idea and Details and Summarizing. Please discuss these skills with your child as you read at night and work in their R.E.D. folders. Some questions you can ask your child include:
“What is the main idea of the story?”
“What picture clues in the story help me to determine the main idea?”
“Can you give me 2-3 details that support why ____ is the main idea?”
“Can you tell me what happened first, next, and last in the story?”
“If you were the author, would you end the story differently? How so?”
In writing, we will continue to practice writing small moments, continuing to add details to our writing. Most children can write 5 sentences. I am noticing that students are reverting back to random uppercase letters in sentences, no spacing between words, and most every child forgets to put a punctuation mark at the end of their sentences. Remind your child of this when you see them writing at home. Please be practicing the spelling words. They always go along with the phonics skill we are working on. The memory to paper writing skill is huge in first grade.
In math we are finishing our study of teen numbers in Math and moving on to counting on from a given number, comparing numbers, and adding combinations of numbers to make 5 and 10 (5-wise and 10-wise). You can practice these math skills with your child at home by reviewing their IXL modules with them as well as asking them questions such as:
“What numbers are less than 18? What numbers are greater than 18?”
“Can you count on from 10 to 100? How about from 53 to 100?”
“Can you count to 100 by 2’s?”
“If I have 3 apples how many more will I need to make 10?”
Math IXL skills for next week are: A.4, A.5, A.19
Reminders
RED FOLDER: Remember to return your child’s completed RED folder tomorrow. All the blue papers must be filled out and completed. Students who do not turn in or complete their RED folder, will miss out on our 30 minute Friday Fun activity at the end of the day. Thank you so much for being an active part of your child’s educational life.
Conferences: Your child’s conference form day/time is going home. Please sign the bottom
portion, saying you can make the conference. I have to meet with each parent in the fall, so please make sure you make it to the conference. It’s oftentimes difficult to reschedule.
Walk-a-thon: Our school Walk-a-Thon is coming up on October 9th. I am excited to enjoy a day of running and walking laps in the fresh air with my class! Parents are welcome to come run with us. We will be doing our walk/run from 2:30-3:15 pm.
Running club: K-2 Running Club begins October 21st! Running Club will go from 3:45-4:30 every Wednesday and is a wonderful way for students to exercise and enjoy time outdoors! We already have 14 friends from our class signed up! I’m pretty pumped to get to hang out with your little one after school. If you haven’t done so, and you want your child to participate, turn in the green running club sheet ASAP. Spots are filling fast.
BOOK ORDER: The October book order went home last week. It is due back Wednesday October 14. Please DO NOT give me cash. Either write a check, or order online using a credit card. You can order through my website: mssandberg.weebly.com. There is a link that goes to scholastic.
Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns.
