We had a nice week back after break. The kids are still a bit chatty. I know they are excited about the upcoming holiday season, but we’re all working on being more quiet and respectful and I’m working on being a bit more patient. Your kids have gotten a lot better though. Tomorrow we will have a Native American dancer come into our classroom to finish up our Native American Unit. We have loved learning about how Native Americans lived in different regions of the U.S.
READING: Our letter sound focus will be the long ‘i’ with a bossy e (like, mine, ride). We will also learn a little bit about the soft c (mice, nice) and soft g (Giana, sage) sounds in words. Our word focus will be the words: call, funny, how, more, so, there and we will review away, school, today, way, why. We will continue practicing reading with expression and this week, while reading stories, we will practice making and confirming predictions. Our vocabulary words will be: connections, possessions, relief, support, and typical.
WRITING: Our mechanics focus of the week will be present tense verbs. We will continue writing informational texts as we write more about things we are learning in science or social studies at school. We will also begin learning how to write opinion pieces.
MATH: We will continue working on subtraction. Students will practice writing addition and subtraction sentences and also solving a problem using both methods.
Math IXL skills next week: D.1, D.2, D.4, D.5, D.14, D.15, D.16, F.6

RED FOLDER: Please continue doing the RED reading folder with your child. I will switch out for new sight words after the Holiday break. It has become pretty daunting, trying to make different leveled books for all kids. I am now going to put books in the RED folders that have to do with whatever phonics skill we are focusing on that week. I will also tape a bookmark that says your child’s reading level, and a website you can go to find books that are at your child’s reading level. If you don’t have books at home or are unable to make it to the public, please let me know and I will send books home with your child on a weekly basis.
BOOK ORDERS: December book orders went home. They will be due back Monday December 7. I will not accept any orders later than that. I have to order by that date, so books come before Winter break. If you’d like to order some books for your child as a Christmas gift, write a note with the book order, and I will send the books home with your kid in a secure package, so they don’t see them when they come. If you misplaced the book order and would like a new one, please let me know.
MOVIE AND PAJAMA DAY: If we can finish up reading The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, I was planning on showing the kids that movie and having a pajama day on Friday December 18. The movie is rated PG. So, I want to make sure parents are ok with it. I intend to skip over any scenes that may be too scary for a child. Please let me know if this is a problem for your family and I will gladly pick a different movie.
HOLIDAY PARTY: I am working on planning a little holiday celebration the Friday before Winter break (December 18). The students have worked incredibly hard all year and I want to celebrate their hard work. If there are any parents who would like to help plan activities or such, please shoot me an e-mail ([email protected]) to let me know you’re interested. I’ll send home a sheet next week letting parents know what’s going on and ways you can help. I’ll most likely do the celebration in the morning from 9:30-10:45.
