This week has been a fast week. Already it’s another Thursday and we have no school tomorrow! Hooray. I just want to send out a quick reminder to parents. While I love when you come to our class, it can often throw our day off when parents ‘pop’ in. I have had numerous parents come into the classroom at random times throughout the day to spend time with their kids. I seriously love having you there, but some heads up would be really appreciated by me. Oftentimes, students get off task and unfocused when parents are here for prolong periods of time. If you ever want to come volunteer and you know you have a free day coming up, shoot me an e-mail and we’ll work something out. Another great time to pop in is during our lunch period which starts at 12:50 pm. Thank you for your understanding.
SNAPSHOT OF NEXT WEEK
Next week in literacy we are working on final blend sounds (‘nd’ as in end, and, bend, etc.). Our Vocabulary words will be admire, offer, charity, focus, challenging. Our Reading Comprehension skills for next week are Author’s Purpose, Order of Events, and focus on Characters. Please discuss these skills with your child as you read at night and work in their R.E.D. folders. Some questions you can ask your child include:
“Why do you think the author wrote this story?”
“Can you tell me what happened in the beginning, middle, end of the story?”
“If you were the author, how would you write the ending to this story?”
“Can you tell me what the characters looks like?”
“Can you tell me what the characters act like?”
“Can you tell me why you like certain characters in the story?”
In writing, we will continue to practice writing small moments, continuing to add details to our writing. Most children can write 5 sentences. As an activity at home, have your child write you love sentences. Make sure they are using capital letters at the beginning, spaces are between words, and punctuation marks are at the end.
We are continuing to work on teen numbers in Math. We have been learning how to construct teen numbers, how many 10’s and 1’s are in each teen number, how to draw a group of teen numbers and more! We are now learning to compare teen numbers with greater than and less than in Math. You can reinforce this skill with your child by asking them questions such as:
“What numbers are less than 15? What numbers are greater than 15?”
“What is 3 more than 12? What is 3 less than 12?”
“How many 10’s and 1’s are in the number 18?”
Math IXL skills for next week are: A.4, A.5, A.19
Reminders
RED FOLDER: Thank you to everyone who returned their child’s signed homework sheet and R.E.D. folder activities! Your children have been telling me all the wonderful reading and practice they’ve been doing at home. Thank you so much for being an active part of your child’s educational life. I think you’ll really get a good snap shot of what we’re doing school. As I finish assessing kids on reading and sight words, I will be putting more challenging books and sight words in their folders. Be proud of your child and all their hard work. I sure know I am. It should only take about 30 minutes each night (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday) to read to you child, have your child read to you, practice sight words or nonsense words, complete any worksheets, practice spelling words, or do math IXL on the computer. You should be dedicating 20 minutes to literacy practice and 10 minutes to math practice. If you have any questions, let me know and I can help you navigate any sort of issues (or praises… those are nice too!). RED folders go home every Monday and are due back every Thursday. Please help your child complete their folder each week.
Walk-a-thon: Our school Walk-a-Thon is coming up on October 9th. I am excited to enjoy a day of running and walking laps in the fresh air with my class! Parents are welcome to come run with us. More details to follow soon.
Running club: K-2 Running Club begins October 21st! Running Club will take place from 3:45-4:30 every Wednesday and is a wonderful way for students to exercise and enjoy time outdoors! I am one of the K-2 coaches and cannot wait to spend more time with our 1st graders and encourage them to build healthy habits and have fun running and playing games!
BOOK ORDER: I am sending home the October book order today. It is due back Wednesday October 14. Please DO NOT give me cash. Either write a check, or order online using a credit card. You can order through my website: mssandberg.weebly.com. There is a link that goes to scholastic.
