We are getting into the groove of school here at Tavelli Elementary. I love the month of October. Not only is the cooler weather terrific, but I always feel like I get into my stride right around this time of year. It’s happened! We’ve got all our first grade routines down, and most moments of our day are just filled with joy and learning. On Tuesday my friend Scientist Clark came in to do some interesting science experiments. He made “elephant toothpaste” by soaking yeast in warm water and adding it to a mixture of liquid soap and hydrogen peroxide. Then he mixed baking soda with vinegar and corked the bottle, causing the cork to fly high into the air! It was interesting to learn the science behind all those experiments. If your kids are wanting to try them out, here are the links to the websites you can find the experiments at:

Reminders
NO SCHOOL: Thursday and Friday October 13-14.
RED FOLDER: RED Folders are due tomorrow. Thank you for helping your child complete those. The folder should only take about 20-30 minutes a night. If you’re doing more than that, you’re doing too much. The goal of the RED folder is to cement skills taught in school. It's supposed to be a way of connecting home and school. However, I don't ever want students to go over 30 minutes of homework. Students should be only doing about 5-10 minutes of Math IXL, 10 minutes of word practice (they can choose from the nonsense words, spelling words, sight words, or sight word sentences) and 10-15 minutes of reading with you or another person.
Walk-a-thon: Tomorrow is our school Walk-a-Thon! Please send your child in comfortable clothes and proper shoes for running/walking. I am excited for our class to do their best, run/walk hard and have a blast doing so. Our class Walk-a-Thon time slot is from 2:30-3:15 if you would like to join your child in the running and walking fun!
Conferences: I am looking forward to meeting you all for conferences next week.
Running club: K-2 Running Club begins October 19! Running Club will go from 3:45-4:30 every Wednesday and is a wonderful way for students to exercise and enjoy time outdoors! We already have 13 friends from our class signed up! I’m pretty pumped to get to hang out with your little one after school. If you haven’t done so, and you want your child to participate, turn in the orange running club sheet ASAP. Spots are filling fast.
BOOK ORDER: Went home a couple of weeks ago. It is due back Wednesday October 12. Please DO NOT give me cash. Either write a check, or order online using a credit card. You can order through my website: mssandberg.weebly.com There is a link that goes to scholastic.
Thanks for sharing your wonderful child with me!
Warmly,
Ms. Sandberg
