We’re really getting into the swing of first grade. We started doing some guided reading groups where students can read books at their different reading levels. We are really enjoying the fiction stories we’re reading, and I’m excited to read the nonfiction texts that goes with each groups book next week. Thank you to all the parents who came in and helped with reading stations. The kids love getting to spend time with you, and it helps me so much to have another adult in the room with me. In math we’ve started talking through addition using dominoes. We’ve been talking about different strategies you can use to add and which ones are more effective. As a way to help kids count on, we’ve been practicing one more and one less. Some students really struggle with this concept. If you’re child does, try asking them what’s one more than 9 (or another number) and what’s less that 9 (or another number). Students should be able to automatically tell you what’s one more or less for numbers 1-20.
We’re really looking forward to the jogathon tomorrow. That’s one of my favorite events as a teacher. It’s really fun to be outside and exercising with your little ones!

CONFERENCES: Family conferences are scheduled for October 18 from 7:30-6:00 pm. I would like to meet with every family and touch base with you all. Here is a link to a sign-up genius so you can find a time that works best for your family. Thank you for your flexibility and making time to come meet with me about your child. I would love to have your child there, so we can celebrate together all the wonderful things they’re doing at school. Follow this link to sign up for a conference time: (e-mail [email protected] for link).
I-STATION/I-READY: I am sending home your child’s login information for i-station and i-ready. I-station is a website that has reading games your child can play that are tailored to where they’re at in their reading literacy. I-station has math games your child can play that will help them with their learning in school. Our school uses both programs to assess children on their reading and math. You can find links to both websites by clicking on the link below.
LIBRARY BOOKS: Tuesday is the only day our class has a slot to check out library books. Please make sure your child’s library books are in their backpacks on Tuesdays because if they bring them back another day, they will need to wait for the next week to check out books. Our librarian also teaches music and isn’t in the library to do catch up library checking out books. You can also keep the books as long as you need them. If it’s a long chapter book and your child wants to continue reading it, please keep it an extra week.
DOJO: I looked into whether or not dojo sends you notifications about behavior in school. It looks like you need to go look into the app to check your child’s behavior daily. I will, however, send you a message or call you if something happens and I want you to be in the loop. Talking out of turn, and being off task are things that happen periodically with first graders. I just need to be able to keep track of it, so that if I’m noticing it’s something that’s happening frequently with your child, I can have a private conversation with them and come up with solutions. Thank you all for your great communication and feedback.
SHIRT ORDER FORMS: Inspire shirt order forms went home last week and are due back by October 15. If you put the form and check in your child’s blue folder, I will collect it and turn it in for you. If you need a new form, let me know. I will stick a new one in your child’s folder.
READING VOLUNTEERS: I still have some open slots for families to come in and help with reading stations in October. If you’re interested follow this link to sign up: (e-mail [email protected] for link).
MYSTERY READER: If you would like to sign up for mystery reader please do! Families can come in and read a book of their choice to our class. Follow this link to sign up to come read to our class in the morning. (e-mail [email protected] for link).
OCTOBER READING LOG: October Reading information and reading logs were re-stuffed in your child’s blue folder. You can put books your read to your child along with books your child reads to you in the reading log!
