A huge “THANK YOU!” to everyone who attended Open House Night yesterday! I am so happy that we got to meet and talk about our classroom and this school year. I hope that all of your questions were answered and that you left with a thorough understanding of our daily schedule, routines, RED folders, and IXL Math Homework practice. Please feel free to e-mail me with any follow-up or questions at [email protected].
Next week in Language Arts, we will begin learning about the phonics skill of “of L blends (cl, pl, sl, fl, bl,)”. You can introduce this skill with your child by brainstorming words that have the “short l blend” sound at the beginning of words. Think “clip, clap, flip, slip, black… etc).” We will continue discussing tens and ones in 2-digit numbers in math class. We will talk about place value and how to represent these numbers orally and on paper. In Social Studies we are learning about citizenship, communities, and community leaders. Please discuss these topics with your child at home so that we can strengthen the connection between home and school. Here are some “discussion starter” questions that you can ask your child:
“What kind of qualities and character traits to leaders have?”
“How are your jobs at school similar to your jobs at home?”
“How can you be a community helper and good citizen?”
“What kinds of responsibilities do you have at school and at home?”
“How can you be a leader at school?”
Reminders:
RED FOLDER: RED folders will start going home on Monday and are a requirement in first grade. Please work with your child in their R.E.D folder on a nightly basis. Practicing sight words and common phrases on a nightly basis will help your child with word recognition and reading fluency. It is also beneficial to read with your child for 15 minutes or more every night. You can start by reading to them and then transition to “read with me” and then “read to me”. I cannot wait to see the progress and growth our little readers will make!
MATH IXL: Please encourage your child to work on IXL a few times a week. Not only will they receive more “awards” on their account but they will also improve their math automaticity and fact fluency. Your child can do each skill module more than one time so if they complete it in our lab time at school, they are able to redo it at home if wanted or needed. As discussed Wednesday, your child is allowed to work up or down based upon their skill set needs. If your child needs remediation in a skill please look at the earlier 1st grade skills or Kindergarten skills on the Main Menu. If your child is flying through their IXL module, you can look ahead to other grade levels. If you go to mssandberg.weebly.com and click on educational websites, there is a link to IXL. Your child’s login is the same as their computer login.
