We made it another week, and man have we been rocking and rolling with our learning. We’re all in different places with our reading, so I’ve been working really hard to create engaging small group lessons to meet everyone where they’re at. Reading is a tricky thing to teach because it comes for kids at different moments. It’s always fun to see children take off with their reading and become confident readers. In math we’re continuing to work on numbers and missing addends in equations (2 + ? = 5). We’ve been working in social studies on what it means to be an effective learner. Ask your child about what the words initiative, collaboration, and perseverance mean. It’s been neat to watch them take ownership of their learning through learning these three strategies. In writing, we’re beginning to have differentiated writing groups. Writing is similar to reading in the sense that we’re all in different places on the spectrum of becoming writers. My main goal is working on writing multiple good sentences, that are on topic.

Reminders
BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT: is Thursday September 27 at 5:00 pm. Please make sure you can come, as I will be providing you with all the information of what we do in our classroom.
READING VOLUNTEERS: In October, I am going to start using helpers in the classroom to help during small group reading time, and would love your help. If you are at all interested in volunteering this year in our classroom please complete DPS Volunteer Application and attend Volunteer Orientation at Inspire on 9/25 @ 8 am to complete Confidentiality Agreement. Volunteers can’t help out in the classroom through DPS until you are cleared through the district. Follow this link to sign up for days to come volunteer: (email [email protected] to get link) If days fill up, let me know and we can try to get more than one parent in a day.
HOME VISITS: I would love to come do a home visit and get to know your child a little better outside of school. If this is something you’re interested in, please e-mail me and let me know and we can set up a time that I can come over for 20 minutes.
JOG A THON: forms went home today giving information about the Jogathon. This is a fun schoolwide fundraiser we do every year! It will be on Friday October 5 in the morning. Families are welcome to come run with our class. More information will be coming soon!
Educational games: If you are interested in activities your child can do at home on the computer or ipad, I have a website full of educational games your child can play. Students’ login for istation are their logins that I sent home a few weeks ago. We also have a math one called I Ready. I will send home login forms for that one as well, if you’d like to practice math or reading at home with your child. If you know of any other good websites I can add to my page, please let me know! I’m always looking for new websites.

MYSTERY READER: We had our first mystery reader, which was really fun! If you would like to sign up for mystery reader please do! Families can come in and read a book of their choice to our class. Follow this link to sign up to come read to our class in the morning (email [email protected] to get link)
SIGHT WORDS: I sent home sight word cards last week. If your child has mastered and can already read most of the words, let me know, and I will send home the next list in their folder on Friday. Some parents have been asking about the CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) page I sent home with words that aren’t real. Those are called nonsense words, and the goal is to get first graders reading simple words like that without sounding them out. I try and assess the students on words like that periodically because it tells me if they know their letter sounds automatically, and where they are in their reading with sounding out versus reading words.
DROP OFF/PICK UP: We need you help getting students to class independently and on time; ready to learn by 7:50AM. Please say goodbye to your child when you drop them off at blacktop by 7:45AM. We would appreciate your support building student independence by allowing students to enter the school with their teacher and classmates. When some students are accompanied by parents and others are not it creates inconsistency and makes it difficult for some students to say goodbye and start their day. Please make sure you pick your child up between 2:50-3:00 PM. Teachers often have meetings or need the time after work to get ready for the next day. Thank you for helping us out!
