Thank you for taking the time to read the Thursday classroom newsletter! The Thursday newsletter will contain lots of important information, so please be sure to read it each week.
We had another great week in kindergarten. We went to the library yesterday. Make sure library books are brought back every Wednesday, as that is the day we have library.
I am really enjoying getting to know your child. It’s been fun to see what they can do and already know; but also great to watch them begin to learn new things and get excited about what they are learning

DUATHALON: The Tavelli duathalon is September 12 from 5:30-7:30. This is a great event. If you will be participating in this running/walking event, please return the green participation form by tomorrow. I will be there that night as well!
SNACK: Send a healthy snack every day. Please don’t send your child with snacks that spill. We like to eat snacks on the carpet while I read. Runny snacks make a big mess.
SCHOOL PICTURE DAY: Will be Monday September 8. Forms went home last week. Please return those forms by Monday.
BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT: Wednesday September 10 at 5:30 pm. Please make sure you are here, as I will be providing you with all the information of what we do in our classroom, volunteer opportunities, etc.
EXTRA CLOTHES: Please keep a change of clothes in your child’s backpack at all times.
LUNCH NUMBER: Help your child practice their lunch (student ID) number on the practice keypad provided last week. I expect them to have this number memorized in a few weeks.
BOOK ORDERS: went home last week and are due back on Friday September 12, 2014. You can order books online: http://mssandberg.weebly.com/scholastic-book-orders.html
Here’s what you can reinforce at home:
Tavelli Rules:
Do your best.
Do what’s right.
Treat others as you want to be treated.
Reading: Please be reading with your child every night. This is a great bonding opportunity and will help your child develop as a reader. As you read, you can point out letters and words we have learned and ask your child to name them. At back to school night, I will talk to you about a RED (read every day) folder your child will be using.
- Identifying all uppercase and lowercase letters. Please help your child learn these at home. We want children to be able to identify all letters by the end of first quarter.
- Word wall words: I and a
- Book handling skills and parts of a book – Cover, title, title page, page, numbers, author, illustrator
Writing: We practiced writing our first name with one capital letter and the rest lowercase (“Kindergarten name”). Continue to help your child with this. We also practiced writing letters and numbers 0-10, drawing a picture that tells a story, and writing the date.
Math: We continue to practice the Calendar Routine. During this routine we talk about the days of the week, practice counting to 20. We learned how to count by 2s and are learning how to identify numbers. We also practiced describing shapes (sides, corners, color) and comparing length (ask your child what compare and length mean).
Science: This week we had an introduction to the Science Lab, had a scavenger hunt and talked about how we use our senses to help us learn
Social Studies: We have been getting to know the friends in our class, and are discussing the many ways we are different and special; and also the many things we have in common.
We are learning to use an “I-Message” to communicate with peers. For example, “I don’t like it when you ____________. Please stop.” If that doesn’t solve the problem, seek an adult for help. We are learning the difference between Tattling vs. Informing – When you or someone else is hurt or in danger, you should always tell (INFORM) an adult. Otherwise, try using an I-message to solve a problem with a peer.
