Man alive, are your children fun! I have been thoroughly enjoying coming to school just for the mere fact that we are having a blast and learning all at the same time! This week, we’ve been having a new calendar teacher come to class. If you’ve heard about Cathy calendar, she’s been coming all the way from England to teach us calendar! In my opinion, she’s a pretty great lady! There’s also this other teacher who comes sometimes, named Ms. Moogie. She only comes when all the children are being really good. Thank you all for supporting your child at home. You have been a huge help in communicating with me so I can better help your child.
THURSDAY FOLDER: Parents please make sure you are looking at your child’s Thursday folder. It goes home on Thursday and should be returned Monday. Any papers that need to be returned to me should be placed in the folder. Otherwise it gets lost in your child’s backpack and I don’t receive it.
THE TIGER FIT WALK.A.THON: The Tavelli Walk-a-Thon is tomorrow (Friday, October 11th). Please make sure your child is dressed for the weather (we will be walking outside), and wears comfortable walking shoes. You are welcome to join us on the back field and walk with your child. Half-day students will walk from 9:15-9:45, and full-day students will walk from 1:35-2:20.
NO SCHOOL: There is no school Thursday, October 17th and Friday, October 18th. These days are for Parent/Teacher conferences. I’ve enjoyed visiting with many of you this week, and look forward to touching base with the rest of you next week.
LIBRARY: We have library on Wednesday. Make sure your child returns their library book.
READING LOGS: Reading with your child makes all the difference in the world. The October reading log went home last Thursday! It’s orange. Please remember to read with your child for 5-15 or more minutes at least 5 times a week and sign the date you read with your child. October reading logs will be due next month.
BOOK ORDERS: They will be due Friday, October 18. You can now complete your orders online through my website: http://mssandberg.weebly.com/scholastic-book-orders.html
EXTRA PRACTICE: The activities and books that go home in the Thursday folder are things you can do at home to reinforce what we do at school. This week I am sending home the math homework links notebooks for the entire school year, so that we aren’t wasting papers making copies. Each week I will let you know what math lessons we’ll be doing in the next week of school and if your child would like to complete the homework link that corresponds to it, they are more than welcome to do so. They can even rip it out, bring it to school and show me.

· blending the sounds for /s/ /a/ and /m/ together to read the word ‘sam’
· High-frequency word like
· Vocabulary words: friend, hobby, partner, favorite, compete
· Parts of a story: beginning, middle and end
· Identify the setting, make predictions, and retell the story.
Writing:
· Writing first name with one capital letter and the rest lowercase (“Kindergarten name”)
· Writing letter M and A and numbers 0-10
· Drawing a picture that tells a story
· Writing high frequency words: I, the, can, we, like
· Writing the date and letters we have learned or know
· We are just beginning to try to write a simple sentence, using finger spaces, with capital letter at the beginning and a period at the end
Math:
· Each child constructed their own number board to reinforce the meaning of numbers. For example, 1=1 dot; 2=2 dots; 3=3 dots; etc.
· recognizing and counting the teen numbers.
· We will be doing math 2.13, corresponding with the homework link.
Science:
· In the science lab, the class observed how a stalk of celery acted like a straw and “drank” blue water from a cup. This is how roots drink water to feed the plant.
· Mrs. Musante, our science lab teacher is requesting the following: Studying Leaves in Science Lab – With the changing season, leaves are starting to change color and fall. Please have your child collect a few leaves of different size, shape, color, and texture in a sandwich bag and bring to school by Monday, October 14th. Students will be comparing their leaves, looking at leaf structure using hand lenses, and completing leaf rubbings for similarities and differences. Inquiry in action!
Social Studies:
· Reviewing the I care cat message, Hands are for helping, not hurting, we listen to each other, we use I care language
· How to play a game and how to take turns and sharing the community materials
· Using an “I-Message” to communicate with peers. For example, “I don’t like it when you ____________. Please stop.” If that doesn’t solve the problem, seek an adult for help.
· Tattling vs. Informing – When you or someone else is hurt or in danger, you should always tell (INFORM) an adult. Otherwise, try using an I-message to solve a problem with a peer.
