We have had a great week in school! We are learning so much and having a blast. Some highlights for the week were, we made sponge shapes using paint. A lot of students even wrote the name of the shapes, copying the letters from the whiteboard! Way to go! I have a sub today to make up for the last day of smartboard training I missed on that rainy day we had. We also went on a tree walk around the school. If you’re wondering why your child came home with a pinecone, we found them on our walk. I can’t tell you how fun it has been teaching your child. I truly mean it, each child has brought their own special something to this classroom and it brings me great joy to come to teach every day.
THURSDAY FOLDER: Parents please make sure you are looking at your child’s Thursday folder. It goes home on Thursday and should be returned Monday. Any papers that need to be returned to me should be placed in the folder. Otherwise it gets lost in your child’s backpack and I don’t receive it.
THE TIGER FIT WALK.A.THON: It is Friday, October 11th! Our biggest PTO fundraiser of the year is next Friday! A full packet went home last Thursday with all students and an extra donation page is included in folders today. All of the money donated during Walk.a.thon stays right here at Tavelli.
NEW WEBSITE: It is my goal to stop printing the weekly letter every week on paper in order to save on paper. I am going to work on sending out the newsletter via e-mail. I didn’t get back all the blue slips letting me know if you wanted to be e-mailed or have the paper newsletter. Please fill out and return. I try to update it every so often with pictures and updates from our classroom. I made sure not to upload photos of those students who had non-permission forms signed. If any other parents don’t want photos of their child on the website, please e-mail me at [email protected].
LIBRARY: We have library on Wednesday. Make sure your child returns their library book.
READING LOGS: Thanks to the parents who got their reading logs in and were reading with their child! It makes all the difference in the world. Your child’s signed reading log is hanging in our classroom and children who turned them in will get a special recess with me! I’m going to teach them how to play a fun game (I haven’t decided which one yet!). The October reading log went home last Thursday! It’s orange. Please remember to read with your child for 5-15 or more minutes at least 5 times a week.
BOOK ORDERS: They will be due Friday, October 18. You can now complete your orders online through my website: http://mssandberg.weebly.com/scholastic-book-orders.html
EXTRA PRACTICE: Just a reminder: The activities and books that go home in the Thursday folder are things you can do at home to reinforce what we do at school. Although it is work to do at home, it’s not homework, and there’s no need to return everything. You’ll find though, that your child wants to practice and show off things they have learned at school. We have finished reading unit 1: Families. I am sending home a workbook that reinforces and goes over all the concepts we learned in the last three weeks. If your child is excited about doing the sheets I send home and wants to show them to me, I’m happy to look at them and give your child praises and stickers!
PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES: Parent/Teacher conferences will be taking place in a couple of weeks. Thanks to the parents who returned the conference slip. If you haven’t yet, please fill out the scheduling form in today’s folder and return it as soon as possible. Thanks!

Science:
· Still learning about trees! We learned about Oak trees and looked at a piece of oakwood. I showed them how to count the rings to see how old a tree is. We also went on a tree walk.
Social Studies:
· Learned the 2nd step to I Care Cat. We use I care language (Please, thank you, you’re welcome)
· How to play a game and how to take turns and sharing the community materials
· Using an “I-Message” to communicate with peers. For example, “I don’t like it when you ____________. Please stop.” If that doesn’t solve the problem, seek an adult for help.
· Tattling vs. Informing – When you or someone else is hurt or in danger, you should always tell (INFORM) an adult. Otherwise, try using an I-message to solve a problem with a peer.
